Hi, I'm "The Rookie Season" and I would like to welcome you to my new NFL blog coming from a rookie's perspective. I am now into my second season of taking a huge interest in the NFL and although some may say that isn't a "rookie", I would argue that considering the amount to learn about the sport, I would say that I am still a newcomer in a big way.
So why start a blog centred round the NFL?
Well, in my first season as a full NFL convert, I have become incredibly interested in the sport and the NFL in general. I spend most of my time outside of work and sometimes during work absorbing as much knowledge about the current state of the NFL by the medium of podcasts, videos, articles, game-film etc. It's easy to see how growing up in America around the NFL could make it almost like a religion to people.
I have been bought up round the acknowledgement of the sport from my Granddad supporting the Packers and my Dad was a 49ers fan (to the point where if I was born a girl I was going to be named “Montana” after one of the greatest QB’s of all time). This meant that there were books about the NFL back when I was child and I was exposed to that from an early age. However, because of the lack of coverage this country probably gave the sport back then, it wasn't something that I would see very often.
Until 2003, I had never even seen an NFL game and that was when I decided to stay up and watch Superbowl 37 between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders. I was mesmerised by the whole event from the pre-game show right through to the Lombardi Trophy presentation and I sure did feel it the next morning as the lack of sleep came down like a hammer on my production for my day but it wasn't the sleep deprivation that kept me from my school work, it was the buzz of the Superbowl.
My school planner over the next few weeks became the makings of an offensive playbook for me and my 4 friends to play another group of mates at a game of 5 v 5 American football in the playground at lunchtime. But the weeks passed and because of the lack of exposure and due to the end of the NFL season, my interest died and as did that of my mates. It would only be around January/February time that it would start to become interesting again.
This followed for the next decade until I saw highlights of RGIII’s rookie season, watching what that man did in his rookie season along with his supporting cast in Washington was brilliant. Had he not been injured who knows where they could of ended up that season. I made a decision that from then on I would following Washington as my team of choice and the upcoming season that year would be my first one in making sure I followed the games as best I could.
With the help of joining a flag football team and playing fantasy football, I was hooked on the sport and that has lead me to this point in writing this blog for anyone who is interested in what I have to say about the NFL.
